Set against the subdued hum of an old café in Kolkata, ‘Interior Café Night’ is a story where time, memory, and emotion converge in unexpected ways. Directed by Adhiraj Bose, the film is an exploration of love lost and love rediscovered, where the past walks in through the café doors, and silence often speaks louder than words. With a dual narrative structure, the film weaves together the stories of two pairs, a middle-aged man and woman and a young couple, who grapple with unresolved emotions in the same space, separated by time but bound by feeling.
Featuring the powerhouse duo Naseeruddin Shah and Shernaz Patel as the older couple, the film balances gravitas and vulnerability in equal measure. Shweta Basu Prasad and Naveen Kasturia deliver strong performances as the young couple, mirroring a different stage of love and longing. Under Bose’s understated direction, this 13-minute film becomes a masterclass in stillness, unspoken dialogue, and the theatre of the everyday.
The café isn’t just a backdrop; it’s a witness to old regrets and new beginnings. The setting is intentionally minimalistic, allowing the emotional subtext of the characters to take centre stage. Every glance, pause, and gesture is loaded with meaning, drawing viewers into the nuanced emotional landscape of the protagonists.
When two seasoned actors like Shah and Patel share a frame, the silence between their words becomes storytelling gold. Their reunion on screen, after years apart, is handled with restraint and dignity, capturing the ache of unfinished conversations and the comfort of shared history.
In contrast to the seasoned love of the older pair, the young couple, played by Shweta Basu Prasad and Naveen Kasturia, navigate vulnerability and fear with raw honesty. Their subplot brings a hopeful, energetic pulse to the narrative, highlighting the contrast between tentative beginnings and nostalgic closures.
The film’s deliberate pacing and warm-toned cinematography evoke a dreamlike quality. Long takes, symmetrical framing, and natural lighting are used masterfully to reflect inner emotional states. The result is a visual experience that is as much about what is not said as what is.
